Research in ICT related sciences (RESICT)

Dr Raimary Chirino developed part of her research training in the topic of Bioinformatics at VUB in AP2018, she started in AP2017.
A possible cooperation between the Cuba software industry and the Flemish software industry was analyzed. Some information about the state of the development of ICT in Cuba was provided by the Ministry of Communications. In this action, Dra Yanet Rodriguez participated in a training developed in Belgium supported by VUB. This was coordinated by Dra. Ann Nowe. We currently evaluate how to follow up on this action.

One training was planned, but 3 training were supported. The selection process was hold at Universidad de Holguin in April, 5 students participated. But, the board of the selection process agreed to consider also some students that participated in the second selection process for Joint PhDs.
The Cuban PhD students Yaime Fernandez from UCLV, Mabel Frias from Universidad de Camaguey and YerandyManso from UCI, developed research trainings at VUB, and Hasselt University (the last two cases) during two months; YerandyManso was supported by Project 3. Beatriz Maria Mendez (UCLV) developed other research training at VUB supported by the CoMo Lab.

Raymari Chirino, from Universidad de Pinar del Rio, developed a research training in the topic of Bioinformatics at VUB, she started in 2017 and finished in 2018.

Not actions were planned, but considering the available budget in the Network, two trainings for 30 days were developed this year (these trainings were continued in AP2017).
Beatriz Maria Mendez (UCLV) and Jose Carlos (UCamaguey) were selected, because they developed a previous research training at VUB related with their research work in Cuba in AP2014 with satisfactory results; this new research training allow them to progress in their research and have the possibility of obtaining the category of Joint PhD eventually.

This training was oriented to support the PhD formation in Cuba, so the PhD students could complement their research work and preparation. In response to this call, six candidates in the category predoc trainings applied.
UC Yoan Martínez López
UCI Darvis Dorvigny
UHo Leydis Lamoth Borrero
UPr Alexey García Padilla
UCLV: Lisandra Díaz and Leidys Cabrera Hernández
The selection process took place on June 19, 2015 at the UCLV. It was conducted by a selection committee composed of the focal points of Project 1 of the Universidad de Pinar del Rio (UPr) and the Universidad de las Ciencias Informáticas (UCI), as well as the Cuban and Flemish coordinators of the Network’s Project 1.
Finally, three predocs presented their proposal in the selection event (Alexey Garcia from the UPr, Darvis Dorvigny from the UCI and Lisandra Diaz from the UCLV) and the proposals of the three candidates for thepredoctoral training were assessed. The result of the selection process was as follows:
For a training as the final part of his doctorate, Alexey García Padilla was selected, from the University of Pinar del Rio. The candidate presented a convincing proposal, and clearly showed the added value for his PhD in performing a research visit in Belgium. The visit allowed him to complement the theoretical studied performed during his PhD. The equipment for doing this validation is currently not available in Cuba. With this action the search area on Signal and Image processing in the Universidad de Pinar del Rio is stregthenen, allowing the increase the cooperation with other research groups in this thematic in Netywork.

Alexey Garcia Padilla, PhD student developed the research training in the period September 16 till October 11, 2015.
Two trainings for 30 days were planned this year. But finally the period was extend to 60 days using budget from activity 1.3.
Within the project we launched a call for scholarships for the AP2015, in order to develop research trainings in Flemish universities, for postdocs of the five universities that are part of the Network. The purpose of this training is to improve the preparation of young Cuban research leaders, in order to increase their skills to coordinate and lead research groups; also, to promote the relations with Flemish experts to promote new international relations and supports.
In response to this call, four Cuban faculties applied for postdoctoral trainings.

The team project proposed to move the budget assigned to activity 1.4 (postdocs) to activity 1.3 (traning of Cuban PhD student) in AP2014, taking into account in AP2013 two postdocs were developed (Yusnier Valle and Yaima Filiberto), and the necessity the support more candidates who participated in the Joint PhD selection, with at least a research training in a Flemish institution.

Open ICT and management systems (ICTSYS)

As years before, most of the training now is based on devops philosophy. Main goals are focused on: increasing developer’s productivity, increasing security and leveraging IT knowledge.
The trainings were oriented on how system and networks administrators can work better with developers and how include also end users in the production cycle. The same for legacy well-known services like email and file management.

Open and free version management system like GitLab and tools to use in continuous delivery cycles (e.g. Vagrant and Docker) are include in all the trainings.
Trainees also learn aboutefficiently in IT process and how improve the general performance of the administrative process in the universities.

Train Flemish and Cuban team members in the usage of the platform.
Local training of ICT staff member of the network on the implementation and support of the platform (to create a national community for the management of the platform in the network).
Give training for system administrators, network administrators and software developers.
